The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test second edition (NNAT 2) tests a child’s ability to reason and problem solve. While the NNAT 2 does not require reading or writing to complete, the question formats may be very different from any other test or schoolwork that your child has experienced. For best results, you should expose your child to the types of questions he/she will encounter before taking the test.
The NNAT 2 includes four types of questions:
Pattern Completion
Your child will be presented with a figure bearing an incomplete pattern. He will need to select the correct image to complete the pattern from four choices.
Reasoning by Analogy
Reasoning by Analogy is a two-step reasoning exercise. The question will present a matrix with some figures or shapes that have a relationship, and a third object that does not have a match. To complete the matrix, your child will need to: 1) identify the relationship between the objects, and 2) apply that relationship to select the correct answer to complete the matrix.
Serial Reasoning
Serial Reasoning is similar to Pattern Completion, in that requires your child to identify a pattern and determine what would complete it. However, instead of asking your child complete a pattern on a figure, your child would need to select an object to complete a series of objects.
Spatial Visualization
This is perhaps the most difficult concept for some children to understand. These questions test the child’s ability to maintain a visual image while rotating or inverting it in their mind to identify the correct answer.
